A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's key government projects.
The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this tragedy,” declared the head of state.
The leader announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose term ended the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his administration's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated pace, surpassing expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked significant questions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent suspension in the building and running of all such projects.
This stoppage was requested while awaiting a full safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."
In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been running in complete compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these vital initiatives.
