Major Lessons from the Heineken Champions Cup's First Round

Now that the initial matches of the 2025-26 Champions Cup concluded, we explore the primary lessons emerging from the fixtures.

Gallic supremacy has defined the competition in recent years, with the past five winners all calling home France's Top 14. But, the first weekend showcased multiple impressive wins from emerging challengers.

Bordeaux Look Set to Go Back-to-Back

Defending champions Bordeaux Begles were a class apart in this tournament a year ago, overpowering Toulouse in the semi-final and then Northampton in the grand finale.

Positioned sixth in the Top 14, some have suggested about their ability to repeat the accomplishment this year. However, in round one, Bordeaux served notice that they are more than capable of achieving back-to-back titles with a points-laden away victory in South Africa.

Handed a tough assignment at a hostile venue against a strong Bulls side boasting stars like Willie le Roux, Handre Pollard, and Canan Moodie, they went into the break down 33-22 at the break.

But, demonstrating their pedigree, they displayed their class in the second half, storming back to secure a 46-33 victory – shutting out the Bulls without a point after the interval.

French try-scoring aces Damian Penaud and global award contender Louis Bielle-Biarrey each crossed the try-line. Any outfit with such firepower on the wings has a chance against whoever they face.

Formidable Bath Appear Equipped of A Deep Run

Bath's lone victory in this competition dates back almost three decades ago. Throughout the ensuing period, they have perhaps not been more strongly positioned to add a second star.

The reigning domestic title-holders are setting the pace domestically after six games and will be looking to transfer that success into Europe – on the back of a shocking early departure in the last campaign.

Johann van Graan's side looked a very complete and balanced unit in their 40-14 defeat of Munster, who are highly placed in the URC.

They marry creative spark – earning the bonus point within 20 minutes at the Rec – with defensive steel, restraining their opponents at bay when they threatened a fightback.

With the likes of Finn Russell and Ben Spencer pulling the strings and a deep squad across the squad, they must be viewed as genuine challengers for a continental title since 1998.

Bath's defining match in the group stage a year ago came in the following week, an agonising 22-21 loss at Benetton with a changed side.

After winning a Premiership title in their history and top domestically again, Van Graan might decide to put a heightened focus on the Champions Cup this year.

Glasgow Deal Sale a Significant Setback

The tournament contains powerful sides in every pool, but their section seems destined to be one of the tightest.

In the competition's present structure, a lot is made about securing home wins, which is why Glasgow's away victory at Sale on Friday evening might just be pivotal.

The team from Scotland were 14-0 down after 20 minutes but responded with character, and two tries at the start of the second period gave them a valuable five points.

In doing so, they handed their chances of progressing a positive start and, by contrast, handed a significant setback to Sale.

With Toulouse – dominant 56-19 victors over the Sharks – and Saracens, who brushed aside Clermont, sharing the group, we can expect high-stakes drama.

And regarding Glasgow's old rivals Edinburgh? They delivered one of their finest displays in Europe in years to stun heavyweights Toulon 33-20, on a excellent weekend for Scottish rugby.

Will Ioane Be the Missing Ingredient of the Leinster Quest?

When considering a contender you would predict to be there or thereabouts at the business end of the continental campaign, it would be multiple champions Leinster.

Yet in the last few years it hasn't gone to plan, as they have shown great potential but fallen short. Beaten finalists three years in a row between 2022-24, they looked overwhelming favourites last season after backing up a 62-0 thrashing of Harlequins in the round of 16 with a 52-0 destruction over Glasgow in the last eight.

It was thought that New Zealand full-back Jordie Barrett would be the key player to secure the title, but they were ambushed and experienced a stunning upset to Northampton Saints in the semi-final.

Now they are trying the All Black experiment again, this time with Rieko Ioane, who claimed a key pass on his bow in Saturday's 45-28 success against Harlequins.

Is Ioane the man to return the cup to Ireland for the first occasion since 2018?

Stormers Seem Equipped to Compete

Since the South African sides joined the Champions Cup in 2022-23, the furthest any of their teams have got is the quarter-finals, and last year no South African side managed to make it out of the pool phase, with several squads not at full strength fielded.

Is this the year that turns around? The Stormers are first in the URC and began their Champions Cup adventure with a 26-17 triumph in France at Bayonne on the opening night.

The post-match comments were promising too, with players and coaches expressing their aspirations, and the players such as South African internationals Cobus Reinach, Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, and Damian Willemse not involved for the first match.

The Stormers seem the most likely contender for a South African side to have a long run in the competition, but write off the Sharks and Bulls, who both lost this weekend but did face formidable opponents respectively.

Northampton and Pau Serve Up a Classic Encounter

There were a few contenders for best fixture, and the Northampton vs. Pau game was among the best.

Pau have been experiencing a brilliant campaign, spearheaded by Argentine internationals Julian Montoya and Facundo Isa and ex-England half-back Dan Robson.

They are presently in second place in the French league and the atmosphere was electric at the Stade du Hameau|their home ground|Pau's
