No previous president would have attempted – truly, no previous leader would have contemplated – solo demolishing major areas of the executive mansion in order to erect a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the active collaboration of multiple the richest Americans, almost all of whom have business with public institutions.

As disorienting as it is to watch the leader attempt to overturn the old idea of democracy and exchange it with its polar opposite, there exists a significant segment among Americans who wouldn't consider it completely novel. That is those of us – in older age cohorts almost a majority – who were educated within mainstream Protestant traditions.

We have witnessed throughout the years as rightwing evangelical churches turned the Jesus we were raised with into the complete reverse of our understanding of him. Essentially, they transformed an image of affection into a figure of hate who blesses precisely the cruelties that he condemned in biblical teachings; this has happened more gradually, across decades as opposed to months, yet it remains disturbing in the same ways, a bewildering emotional blow for countless people.

A Toxic Christianity Establishes Itself

Therefore allow me to outline the Christ from my upbringing, because theoretically Christ is the focus of any Christian faith, and given that the fastest-growing cadre of Americans could have minimal awareness about him because they identify as skeptics or agnostics or religiously unaffiliated. In the fifties it was controlled through watering down – Protestantism was so prevalent that it essentially baptized the status quo.

A Struggle for the Highest Within Us

Hence I have become encouraged to see the persistent defiance against Trump emerge over the last twelve months.
